Putang Ina
Materials: Scrap Metals
Dimensions: 6 ft x 2ft x 2ft
Created as Alex’s bachelor’s thesis, Putang Ina presents a life-sized figure of a woman on all fours, her body constructed from scrap metal—fragmented, fractured, and fading at the edges. While her face, breasts, and buttocks remain intact, the rest of her form dissolves into rough, uneven transitions, evoking a body on the verge of disintegration. Threaded through parts of the figure are wire-formed words—text drawn from an interview with a sex worker, subtly embedded into the piece like memory, trace, or wound.
Through the metaphorical heft of metal—its resilience, its violence, its history—Alex speaks to the complexities of representation, labor, and survival. The figure is not whole, but endures. Putang Ina stands as both sculpture and testimony, confronting the politics of who gets to be seen, and how.
